The Long Beach City Council approved a series of contracts and workers' compensation payments at its July 21 meeting, while a separate Southeast Resource Recovery Facility board meeting where a $5.7 million demolition contract was scheduled for a vote was cancelled.
\nThe Council awarded workforce development contracts to Jobs for the Future and Telling Your Story, each not to exceed $600,000 annually (8-0). It adopted Resolution RES-26-0110 for a Cintas Corporation uniform and mat rental contract not to exceed $480,000 annually (8-0), and awarded a locksmith services contract to Hill's Bros. Lock & Safe, Inc. not to exceed $148,500 annually (8-0).
\nThe Council authorized workers' compensation payments to three employees: Gerardo Perez ($87,942.50), David Ward ($106,502.50), and Ignacio Zavala ($83,302.50) (8-0).
\nThe Council approved several appropriation increases from district priority funds for community organizations and events:
\nThe Southeast Resource Recovery Facility board was scheduled to meet July 22 to consider authorizing a demolition contract with Silverado Contractors, Inc. for up to $5,724,470. That meeting was cancelled, so no action was taken. Minutes are not yet available.
\nThe Police Oversight Commission elected Dr. Naida Tushnet as Chair (6-0) and Commissioner Bender as Vice Chair (6-0). The body approved January 29, 2026 meeting minutes (5-0-1) and received and filed several updates, including the Annual Update from the Office of Ethics and Transparency (6-0), a presentation on the Ralph M. Brown Act and Robert's Rules of Order (6-0), community outreach efforts (6-0), and a quarterly update from the Police Oversight Director (6-0).
\nThe subcommittee approved a $50,000 budget plan for a Mayor's Fund pilot hygiene project to be submitted to the Mayor and City Council (3-0). Members also approved minutes from the May 11, 2026 meeting (3-0), a recommendation to discuss public engagement strategies (3-0), and a recommendation to discuss future agenda items (3-0).
\nThe Civil Service Employee Rights and Appeals Commission approved minutes for its July 8, 2026 meeting (4-0) and for Administrative Hearing 14-D-2425 (4-0), and received and filed a recommendation to hear disciplinary appeal case 09-D-2425.
\nThe Commission for Women and Girls approved adding Commissioner Delabre to the Mentorship and Education Ad Hoc Committee (7-0), approved June 24, 2026 minutes (7-0), and designated commissioners for the Long Beach Jazz Festival on August 1, 2026 (7-0).
\nThe Cultural Heritage Commission received and filed draft Objective Design Standards for Accessory Dwelling Units on historic properties (6-0) and approved June 30, 2026 minutes (6-0).
\nThe Budget Oversight Committee approved an FY 27 meeting and presentation topics schedule (3-0) and received and filed reports on community budget engagement and the Health and Human Services Department.
\nThe Finance Authority of Long Beach adopted Resolution No. FALB-01-2026 setting meeting dates for August 5 and September 23, 2026 (2-0).
\nThe City Council held a July 21 closed session to discuss labor negotiations with multiple employee organizations, a lease negotiation for the Long Beach Amphitheater at 1051 Queens Hwy with Legends Global Arena Management, LLC, and existing litigation related to Southern California Edison Company application U338E for customer-financed facilities for the THUMS Islands. The Government Operations and Efficiency Committee held a separate closed session on workers' compensation claims of Allan Legayada and Juan Fajardo. Minutes for these sessions are not yet published.
